SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) recorded a season-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead No. 14 Syracuse to a 13-7 win against Connecticut on March 26 at the Carrier Dome. After falling behind 5-2 with 8:55 left in the first half, the Orange finished the game with an 11-2 scoring stretch for the win.

It was Rowan’s fifth hat trick of the season and her three assists is a season-best. Graduate student Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) and freshman Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) both added hat tricks in the win. It was Dragon’s second three-goal performance of 2006, and Mosenson’s third. Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) recorded two goals and reigning Defensive Player of the Week Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was stellar in goal again with 11 saves.

UConn got out to a 5-2 lead in the first 21 minutes of the game. Dragon posted the first goal of the game at the 26:34 mark, but Kristin Link quickly responded with a free-position goal to notch the game 1-1. After trading goals again, the Huskies scored three-straight goals to take the 5-2 advantage. Link notched one of the goals and Shannon Burke had the other two. Link and Burke combined for UConn’s first five goals. The two teams then went scoreless for the next four minutes before Rowan brought SU closer with a goal with 4:40 to go in the half. Mosenson brought the Orange within one, 5-4, after she one-timed her own rebound into the back of the net. Kristen Haldeman stopped Mosenson’s first shot and deflected it straight up for Mosenson to send home. Laura Trzasko put UConn back up two, 6-4, but Syracuse scored twice in the last 2:31 to tie the game at the break. Fortune scored SU’s fifth goal and sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) took advantage of a free-position to tie the game.

SU opened the second frame by scoring the first four goals to take the lead for good. Rowan had a hand in three of the four goals. She scored twice and assisted junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) on the game-winner to open the half. The SU defense buckled down after halftime as the Huskies managed just one goal at the 7:07 point in the half. UConn was held scoreless for 25:58 seconds between the 3:05 mark in the first half and its seventh goal of the game in the second half.

SU improved its record against Connecticut to 9-0 all-time.

For the Huskies (2-4, 0-1), Burke had three goals and an assist. Link and Trzasko both registered two goals.

Syracuse (6-2, 1-1) hosts two more games this week to cap its seven-game home stand. On Tuesday, March 28, SU hosts in-state foe Albany in a 4:00 p.m. clash at the Carrier Dome. On Friday night, March 31, the Orange faces the top team in the country when No. 1 Northwestern comes to the Dome for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
