SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) combined for eight goals as the No. 13 Orange defeated Albany, 17-5, on March 28 at the Carrier Dome. Graduate student Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) contributed with four points and senior Evelyn Long (Edgewater, Md.) recorded her first career hat trick in the win.
Rowan and Fortune both posted four goals while Rowan added two assists to notch six points for the second-straight game. Dragon had two goals and two assists. Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) and sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) both added a goal and an assist. Senior Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) stopped 10 shots, her third-consecutive game with double-digit saves.
The Orange outshot the Great Danes 37-17 in the game and held a 39-30 advantage in ground balls. Syracuse only had 11 turnovers compared to Albany’s 20.
SU improved its record to 4-0 against the Great Danes and 20-4 all-time against Empire State opponents. The Orange held its fourth-straight opponent under 10 goals, the first time that has happened in the same season since 2003. The defense held Albany scoreless for a span of 28:15, the second-longest span this season.
Syracuse got off to a fast start when Fortune put the first goal in 40 seconds into the game, the earliest a goal has been scored in an Orange game this season. Sarah Spillett evened the game, 1-1, at the 24:59 mark when she used a pass from Julie Bush to notch a goal. SU scored the next six goals of the half to take a decisive 7-1 lead into the break. Rowan had three goals in that run.
Dragon added to the lead quickly, scoring 25 seconds into the second half to give SU an 8-1 cushion. Krissy Rajczak tallied the next goal for the Great Danes to make it 8-2, but that is as close as Albany would get. The Orange scored seven unanswered goals to push the lead to 15-2 with 7:28 to go in the game.
For Albany (5-4), Spillett led the team with a goal and two assists. Rajczak added two goals and Bush had a goal and an assist.
Syracuse (6-2) hosts No. 1 Northwestern on Friday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. It is Orange Day at the Dome as fans are encouraged to don the school color as SU tries to topple the undefeated Wildcats.
