SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Melody Agnew (Winchester, Mass.), junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.), and freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) had a hand in 11 of Syracuse's 12 goals as the No. 14 Orange defeated upstate rival Colgate, 12-8, on April 12 at the Carrier Dome. SU remained undefeated against the Raiders with a 9-0 record and improved its all-time mark against New York state teams to 21-4.
Rowan and Fortune both posted four goals in the win and both lead the team with seven hat tricks this season. Agnew registered a season-high three goals, all in the first half, and assisted on another. Graduate student Caitlyn Dragon (Jackson, N.J.) posted the other goal for Syracuse. Junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) and sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) both picked up six ground balls. Brady also had a pair of assists, a new career high. Junior Chelsea Strodel (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephanie Bissett (Woodstock, Md.) each caused three turnovers in the game. Senior Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was credited with 13 saves.
Colgate started the scoring when Megan Janson scooped up a ground ball in front of the SU net and slipped a shot in just over a minute into the game. Syracuse responded with three goals, two coming on free-position opportunities from Agnew and Fortune. Rowan notched the third goal to put the Orange up 3-1 with 22:58 left in the first half, a lead SU would not lose. After Kelly Winning split the middle of the SU defense to make it 3-2, Syracuse spread the gap further by scoring three more unanswered goals. Fortune weaved her way through the Raider back line and snuck a shot past the keeper to make it 4-2. Dragon took a pass from Agnew and marched around the cage to get an open shot which she connected on. At the 13:48 mark, Brady found a streaking Agnew in front of the net to put the Orange up 6-2. After Katie McVeigh made the most of a free-position, the same Brady-Agnew combination connected to add to the advantage, 7-3, with 9:19 to go. Syracuse added three more goals to the total and allowed just one more to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Colgate did all they could in the second half and opened the frame with a free-position goal to cut the deficit to 10-5 in the opening minute. Fortune nailed a free-position opportunity to push the lead back to six goals, but the Syracuse offense stalled from there and scored just once more in the final 23:29 of play. McVeigh scored on her second free-position goal of the night to make it 11-6 before Rowan pushed the lead back to six with 11:00 left in the game. Neither team could find the back of the net until the 5:22 mark when Maddie Kearns scored on a pass from Ashley Didio. The Raiders were able to notch one more goal just 26 seconds later, but 12-8 is as close as Colgate got.
McVeigh led the Raiders (8-6) with a hat trick while Winning had a goal and an assist. Five other Colgate student-athletes recorded a point. Molly Carroll registered a goal and six ground balls and Sue Bielamowicz stopped 14 shots in a losing effort.
Syracuse (8-4) will go on its first and only extended road trip of the 2006 season beginning on Saturday, April 15, when the Orange heads to Rutgers for a 3:30 p.m. BIG EAST clash. SU will also face No. 12 Cornell and No. 8 Notre Dame on the road before coming home on May 7 for the season finale against No. 16 Pennsylvania.
