PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Freshman Kathryn Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) scored a season-high six goals as the No. 14 Orange defeated Rutgers, 18-8, on April 15 at Yurcak Field in BIG EAST action. Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) matched her career high with five goals in the win, and both student-athletes have cracked the top-10 list for goals in a single season.
Rowan and Fortune have both recorded 41 goals this season, which puts them fifth all-time in a single season. Leigh-Ann Zimmer holds the school record with 52 goals in 2004. Lauren Brady sits in second at 44 goals, while Zimmer and Monica Joines tallied 43 goals in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
The pair has established itself as one of the most prolific at Syracuse with a combined 82 goals this season. That total is second all-time for a pair of student-athletes in the same season. In 2004, Zimmer and Joines combined for 92 goals.
Sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) added career highs with four goals and six points in the game. She also matched her personal-best with a pair of assists for the second-straight game.
Syracuse jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the first half. Fortune scored the Orange’s first three goals of the game in the first nine minutes of play. Rutgers could not recover from that deficit and SU went into the half with a 10-4 lead.
The Orange came out firing again in the second half and scored six of the first eight goals to take an insurmountable 16-6 lead. Rowan scored three quick goals in the first 14 minutes of action.
Syracuse fired 38 shots on Katherine Parker in her first career start. The Orange defense proved too much for the Scarlet Knights as reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and leading scorer Katie Batiuk was held to a single goal on a free-position.
For Rutgers (6-6, 1-3), Katy Lawrence registered two goals and an assist. Nine Frankoski was credited with a pair of goals.
Syracuse (9-4, 2-2) returns to action on Wednesday, April 19 when it travels to Ithaca to take on Cornell at 7:00 p.m.
