Direction to Drumlins Tennis Club
SYRACUSE, N.Y.- BIG EAST Tournament position will be on the line when the Orange hosts St. John’s in its final match of the season on Friday at the Drumlins Tennis Club at 1 p.m. The match could prove to be the difference between who receives the number five and six seeds at the BIG EAST Tournament, April 20-23. SU will look to add to its 15-match home winning streak against the Red Storm as it has not lost at home since April 3, 2004. Friday’s match will be the final home match for senior We-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) who is 127-79 in her career and ranks 16th on the school’s all-time wins list.
Syracuse enters its season finale with a record of 14-5, 6-1 in the BIG EAST, after going on the road short-handed to earn a pair of victories against Connecticut and Seton Hall last weekend. There were several highlights on SU’s final road trip of the regular season, none greater than junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) breaking the SU school record for consecutive singles wins. Lipton will look to add to her record 14 straight wins against the Red Storm on Friday.
Sophomore Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) came out on fire against Seton Hall last weekend, winning 6-0, 6-0 for the first time this season at number one singles. Catherine Zawadzki (Booklyn, N.Y.) had a stellar weekend, winning in straight sets in both matches at number two singles. Zawadzki has now won three straight.
Lipton leads the team in singles wins with a 23-8 record. Junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) is second with a record of 20-10. In doubles play, Vaynberg/Zawadzki own a team-best 25-6 record, while junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) and Lipton are 21-5.
Syracuse has never lost to St. John’s, going 5-0 all-time against the Red Storm. The Orange will be looking to improve on its 15-match home winning streak by continuing its dominance against teams from the Empire State. The team is a perfect 4-0 against opponents from New York (Buffalo, Colgate, Army, Cornell) this season.
St. John’s enters Friday’s match with a record of 12-6, 6-2 in the BIG EAST, after sneaking out a 4-3 victory against Southern Mississippi on Monday. Against Southern Miss, the Red Storm came from behind to win four singles matches. Winning for St. John’s were Mariana Chachua at flight two, Barbora Blahutiakova at flight three, Alison Adamski at flight five and Gabija Gasiunaite at flight six. The Red Storm is led by Alison Adamski who is 11-3 on the year, while Lauren Lorenzetti is second on the team in wins with a record of 10-4. The Orange defeated St. John’s 4-3 last season.
