ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell defense held the Orange offense scoreless for 25:28 as the No. 11 Big Red defeated No. 13 Syracuse, 9-4, on April 19 at Schoellkopf Field. During the SU dry spell, Cornell was able to extend its lead to 7-3, a lead the Orange could not come back from. Junior Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) scored a pair of goals in the game for the Orange.
Fortune’s two goals moves her into a tie for third place on the single-season goals list. Her 43 goals are now tied with Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Monica Joines and is one away from Lauren Brady’s 44 goals.
Sophomore Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) and junior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) tallied the other goals for Syracuse. Senior Jen Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) stopped nine shots in goal.
The four-goal output was the lowest since SU scored four in a 13-4 loss against Dartmouth on April 11, 2004.
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Courtney Farrell started the scoring at the 28:40 mark when she snuck a shot in the top left corner of the goal. Just two minutes later, Katherine Simmons went top shelf and tallied the second goal. Neither team could find the net for over 10 minutes until Brady took advantage of a Big Red mistake and picked up a loose ball in front of their net. Her first shot attempt nailed the pipe, but she picked up the rebound and sent it back in to make it 3-1 with 13:40 left in the half. Alison McKeown made the most of a free-position opportunity to extend the lead back to two with 10:56 left. DePetris pulled the Orange within one again when she bounced a shot past the Cornell goalkeeper. Noelle Dowd pushed the lead back to two goals when Farrell found her in front of the cage for an easy tally. Junior Melissa Pearsall (Cortland, N.Y.) hammered the pipe with a shot attempt at 6:05, and Cornell picked up the ground ball and pushed it down the field for a Dowd goal just four seconds later to take a 5-2 advantage. Fortune capped the first half scoring when she hit a free-position shot with 2:26 left to make it 5-3 heading into halftime.
Cornell dominated Syracuse in ground balls, owning a 16-7 advantage in the first half. In the game, the Big Red picked up 27 ground balls compared to the Orange’s 17.
The Big Red scored the first two goals of the second half to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Allison Schindler notched her first goal of the game, an unassisted goal at the 24:02 mark. Simmons recorded her second goal of the game with 17:42 to play when she split the middle of the SU defense with a shot. Fortune finally scored for the Orange with 6:53 to go in the game on a free-position shot, making it 7-4 Big Red. Lindsey Moore put the game away for good when she capitalized on a free-position opportunity to put Cornell up 8-4 with 3:31 to play in the game. Simmons added her final goal with 36 seconds left.
For the Big Red (9-2), Simmons registered a game-high three goals. Down posted a pair of goals and Farrell added a goal and an assist. Maggie Fava was credited with 10 saves in goal.
SU (9-5) is back in action on April 29 when it travels to No. 7 Notre Dame for its final BIG EAST game of the 2006 season.
