SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University men’s rowing team will travel to Boston on Saturday to compete for the Conlan Cup against the crews from Boston University and Columbia University. The Orange, whose varsity eight is ranked ninth in this week’s USRowing poll, will have three eights racing on Saturday morning, one in each of the varsity, JV and freshmen eight races. In addition to the eights races, SU will have a boat in the third varsity four “A” and third varsity four “B” races. The BU Terriers have captured the Conlan Cup the past three years.
The Orange will look to build on its win from last weekend against Navy and Cornell. The varsity boat was able to take home the Goes Trophy for the first time in seven years with its 11 second win against Navy. The JV boat beat both crews as well with a nine second win. The Orange saw more success in the 3V race with an exciting come from behind victory. The freshmen eight beat out Navy but finished behind Cornell. Due to the strong showing of all of the Orange boats the team also captured the all points trophy.
Members of the varsity eight on Saturday will be sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Andover, Mass.), senior Terry Wilkin (King of Prussia, Pa.), junior Tim Mambort (Toledo, Ohio), junior Dave Barone (Maumee, Ohio), senior Dan O’Shaughnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario), junior Bartosz Szczyrba (Poznan, Poland), junior Justin Stangel (Madison, Wisc.), junior Matt Morrow (Hixson, Tenn.) and junior Chad Taylor (New Milford, Conn.).
SU head coach Dave Reischman knows his team will be facing a pair of highly talented teams this weekend.
“BU is a fantastic crew and have beaten us the past three years,” Reischman said. “To have a chance, we have to race at a very high level. We don’t plan on doing anything different than in the last two races – just focus on our boat and make it go as fast as we can.”
Boston and Columbia have both enjoyed success this spring season. The BU varsity fell to a strong Northeastern crew by 4 seconds in its first race of the spring two weeks ago. Northeastern also fell in the JV and freshmen races as well. Last Saturday, the crews fought back and beat Rutgers and Dartmouth. The Terriers dominated the weekend by winning all four races.
Columbia has had a very busy spring season thus far. It started off with an impressive win over Rutgers and followed it up the next weekend with another win against MIT and Army. The past two weeks have been more challenging for the Lions as they have lost to the crews from Penn, Princeton and Yale.
Action will begin early Saturday morning on the Charles River starting in the basin and finishing near the BU boathouse.
