SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team will play six squads that advanced to the 2005 NCAA Men’s College Cup when it takes the field for the 2006 campaign. Seton Hall, Providence, Connecticut, St. John’s, Hartwick and South Florida competed for the national championship in 2005 and appear on SU’s 16-game 2006 slate, released by Orange head coach Dean Foti on Friday, April 7. The Orange will kick off 2006 with a home match against Niagara on August 25th at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Four of Syracuse’s 2006 opponents finished last season ranked in the final NSCAA/adidas national poll. The Huskies earned a No. 7 final ranking. Hartwick finished 11th. St. John’s ended the year at No. 16 and Seton Hall concluded 2005 ranked 21st. Eight of the Orange’s 2006 foes recorded at least 10 victories and SU’s 16 opponents combined for a 152-113-48 overall record last season.
The Orange’s 2006 slate includes nine home dates and seven road matches. Syracuse will play an 11-game BIG EAST schedule and five non-conference matches.
Following its season-opener against the Purple Eagles on Aug. 25, SU will take on Albany (Sept. 4), Binghamton (Sept. 20) and Hartwick (Oct. 10) in home non-league pairings and compete at Loyola (Sept. 1) in its lone road out-of-conference contest.
SU’s league schedule begins with back-to-back road matches at Georgetown (Sept. 8) and Seton Hall (Sept. 10). The Orange return home for consecutive games versus Providence (Sept. 15), Connecticut (Sept. 17) and Binghamton before going back on the road for games at Cincinnati (Sept. 23) and St. John’s (Sept. 27). Foti’s unit hosts Louisville on Oct. 1 and will rest for six days before traveling to Villanova (Oct.7). SU’s final away match will be in Tampa, Fla. on Oct. 14 against South Florida. The Orange will conclude the 2006 regular season with home games against Rutgers (Oct. 18) and DePaul (Oct. 21).
The Orange returns 16 letterwinners from a 2005 squad that posted a 7-8-4 overall record and made an appearance in the BIG EAST Championship.
