Rowing to Begin Spring Season at Ten Eyck Cup

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University men’s rowing team will kick off its spring season as it travels to New Brunswick, N.J. to take part in the Ten Eyck Cup against Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. The Orange will have three eights racing against the Scarlet Knights, one in each of the varsity, JV, and freshmen races. Rutgers has won the cup the last three years.
This will be the first race for SU this year as it looks to build on its successful fall season. During the team’s last competition of the fall, the varsity eight came in 3rd at the Princeton Chase. The Orange carried that momentum in to the winter training season and hopes to continue on against Rutgers.
For Rutgers, this will already be the third race of the season. On March 25, Rutgers’ varsity and JV fell to Columbia while its freshmen came out with a victory. On April 1 all three of Rutgers’ boats lost to Princeton, who is ranked number one in the USRowing poll.
Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman knows that racing against Rutgers is always a good battle but feels very confidant with his crew.
“I think the guys are ready to race. We have really enjoyed not racing until the second week of April this year,” he said. “The extra two weeks has given us an extra bit of time to sort out line-ups and not feel like we have to force the cadence up for an early race.”
SU’s schedule was changed this season from previous years in order to give the Orange more time on the water after the spring training trip before its first race. Traditionally, the first race had been against Boston University in late March, but the weather conditions were often very harsh for the crews to be able to find a decent racing course so a change was made.
The first race of the day will start at 5:30 p.m. and is later in the day than most race days because of the tidal change on the Raritan River. The race course will also not be a traditional straight 2000 meter course. There will be a slight turn towards the beginning of the course so the boats will start with a slight stagger to take this into effect.
Following this weekend’s event, SU will host its only home race of the year on April 15 against Cornell and Navy. The crews will be competing for the Goes Trophy. The Orange will also be dedicating a new boat in honor of Dr. Bruce Chamberlain ’41 following its April 15th race.
