SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University men’s rowing team will travel to Hanover, N.H. to compete against Dartmouth for the Packard Cup on Saturday. The Orange, whose varsity eight is ranked eighth in this week’s USRowing poll, will have the entire crew racing on Saturday morning in four eights, one in each of the varsity, JV/3V and freshmen races. Syracuse has not won the Packard Cup since 1990.
The Orange hopes to finish up its regular season undefeated for the first time since 1990 by reclaiming the Packard Cup after 16 years. The varsity eight comes off another win two weeks ago against Temple and Virginia. The JV eight also won and the freshmen eight earned their first win of the year. The crews had last weekend off from racing for the first time this season.
Members of the varsity eight on Saturday will be sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Andover, Mass.), senior Terry Wilkin (King of Prussia, Pa.), junior Tim Mambort (Toledo, Ohio), junior Dave Barone (Maumee, Ohio), senior Dan O’Shaughnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario), junior Bartosz Szczyrba (Poznan, Poland), junior Justin Stangel (Madison, Wisc.), junior Matt Morrow (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and junior Chad Taylor (New Milford, Conn.).
SU head coach Dave Reischman has enjoyed the week off from racing and looks forward to competing against Dartmouth this weekend.
“Having a week off allows us to break up our routine and get a bit more work in than in a normal race week,” Reischman said. “We are pretty eager to give the (Packard) Cup a change of scenery and I imagine that they are equally determined to hold on to it. It doesn’t matter who you line up against this time of the year in our league, once the starter’s flag drops you are going to be in for a tough boat race.”
Dartmouth has struggled some this season, but Reischman points out that the Big Green has been making some improvements in its past few races. Dartmouth has raced and lost to Yale, Rutgers, Boston, Brown, Wisconsin and Oregon State. The Big Green was able to come out ahead against MIT.
Action will begin Saturday morning with the freshmen race at 8:20 a.m., JV/3V at 8:40 a.m., and the varsity at 9:00 a.m.
