Varsity Eight Finishes Second in Petite Final, Eighth Overall at IRA Regatta

CAMDEN, N.J.- The Syracuse varsity eight finished second in the petite final of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta in Camden, N.J. on Saturday to place eighth overall. California finished first overall by winning the grand final, while Princeton was second. The Orange’s eighth place finish comes after finishing the regular season undefeated for the first time since 1990.

In the varsity eight petite final, Northeastern snuck out the win on the Cooper River with a time of 5:43.61, less than two seconds ahead of the Orange who finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:45.41. Finishing just behind Syracuse in third was Wisconsin who posted a time of 5:45.91.

SU’s other three boats competing in finals on Saturday all finished third in their heats. The second varsity eight broke the six-minute mark in the petite final with a time of 5:59.08 to place ninth overall. Cornell won the race with California finishing second.

In the varsity four w/o third level final, SU finished third in a time of 6:46.56 behind St. Joseph’s and Ohio State, respectively. The Orange earned 15^th place overall with its finish in the third level final.

The freshmen eight crew posted a third place finish in the third level final with a time of 6:05.51. Navy claimed first place in the race, while St. Joseph’s was second.
