Nine former SU lacrosse stars will compete on Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) championship weekend when the Denver Outlaws, San Francisco Dragons, Philadelphia Barrage and Boston Cannons play in the league semifinals at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. on Friday, Aug. 25. The Outlaws will meet the Dragons in the first semifinal at 9:00 p.m. EST and Philadelphia will tangle with Boston at approximately 11:45 p.m. EST
Three time All-American John Glatzel and SU’s 2006 scoring leader (55 points) and second-team All-American Brett Bucktooth are on the Boston roster. Bucktooth has 14 goals and 16 total points in his first season with the Cannons after being selected in the second round of the MLL Draft.
Boston will face off against Philadelphia in the second semifinal, and the Barrage boast three former SU’s stars on its roster. Roy Colsey, a four-time All-American at Syracuse and a member of the 2006 U.S. national team, leads the club with 45 points. He joins forces with another four-time All-American and member of two SU national championship teams Michael Springer, and Joe Ceglia, who was Springer’s teammate for the Orange’s run to the 2000 NCAA title. Springer is third on the Barrage with 35 points.
Springer and Ceglia’s college teammate, Chris Cercy, competes for the top-seeded Denver Outlaws. He has played in 12 games for the Outlaws this year and has one goal. Cercy earned All-America honors at SU in 2000 and 2001.
Orange legend Ryan Powell leads the expansion San Francisco Dragons in scoring with 58 points, including 34 goals. Like Colsey, Powell represented the United States at the ILF World Championship last month. He is joined on the Dragons by Joe Yevoli, who scored 42 points for the Orange in 2006, and Jarrett Park, a former two-sport star at SU (soccer and lacrosse) that has contributed 17 points on the season.
The winners of the two semifinals meet for the MLL championship on Sunday, Aug. 27. The title game will be televised live on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. EST
