Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse women's soccer team forced double overtime in its home-opener against St. John's, but lost to the Red Storm, 3-2. The Orange scored twice in the second half to take the lead, but a late goal in regulation tied the game and a late goal in the second overtime won it for St. John's.
The Red Storm opened the scoring 55 seconds into the game when Natasha Lee beat Orange sophomore goalie Eliza Bennett-Hattan on a breakaway. The Orange didn't break into the scoring column until the 49th minute when senior captain Molly McManus kicked in a cross from junior Jen Taormina on the near post for her first goal of the season. The Orange controlled the ball for most of the second half and sophomore Sarah VanSickle gave the Orange the lead in the 80th minute when she corraled a loose ball in front of the net and scored from eight yards out.
The game remained tied until St. John's had one final offensive push late in the game. On a corner kick with under a minute left, Courtney Lane found Vaila Barsley on the far post for a game-tying header. The first overtime went scoreless, as did most of the second. With under a minute left in the game, Amanda Santos broke free and put a shot on net that Bennett-Hattan made a diving save on. The ball bounced loose in front of the net and Lee scored her second goal of the night for the win.
The Orange hosts Colgate Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Orange All Access and is part of a doubleheader with the SU men's team, who hosts Connecticut at 3:00 p.m.
