Syracuse, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s soccer team lost to Pittsburgh, 4-2, to remain winless in BIG EAST play. The Orange has now lost four-straight games and is 0-3-0 in BIG EAST matches. Freshman Tess MacDougall scored the first goal of her career and junior Lauren Jentzen netted her first of the season. Freshman Sami Hirsh started her second game in goal, recording six saves.
The Orange had to play from behind early once again, as sophomore Meta Haley lofted a shot into the top of the goal from 25 yards out in the third minute. The Orange knotted the score seven minutes later on freshman Tessa MacDougall’s first goal of her SU career. Junior Jen Taormina played the ball down the sideline to sophomore Amanda Arcuri, who crossed it to a cutting MacDougall, who one-timed a shot to the top of the net.
The game was tight throughout the remained of the second half, with neither team gaining an advantage. In the 42nd minute, Pitt senior Kristina Francois played a ball into the Orange zone to freshman Ashley Habbel, who was streaking down the middle of the field. Habbel got behind the defense, used one quick move to Hirsh and put the ball into the empty net. Habbel scored again at the beginning of the second half to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
The score remained 3-1 until the 81st minute when the Orange mounted a strong offensive attack. Sophomore Samantha Hawn brought the ball down the sideline and crossed it into the box where Jentzen darted to the near post and scored to bring the Orange within one.
The Orange was unable to complete the comeback as Pitt played the ball into the Orange zone and Francois came up with it behind the defense, beating a diving hirsh to the far post in the 81st minute to put the game out of reach. The Panthers outshot the Orange, 16-13.
