Syracuse, N.Y.- The defense came up strong for the Orange women's soccer team in its 0-0 tie against Dartmouth. Freshman goalie Eliza Bennett-Hattan made a career-high nine saves to record the second shutout of her career. It was the first a draw in the Syracuse-Dartmouth series.
The defenses controlled the game in the first 20 minutes, allowing just two shots by each team. In the second half, the Orange’s best scoring opportunity came when sophomore Samantha Hawn ripped a shot off the crossbar and junior Darcy Hamill put a shot on the rebound that soared over the net.
The Orange defense held off the Big Green, which outshot the Orange 22-8 on the game. Sophomore Sarah VanSickle played a hard game on defense, winning several balls on free and goal kicks.
After the first overtime passed without either team threatening, the Orange defended its goal well in one minute into the second overtime when Big Green forward Emily Tracy corralled a loose ball from 10 yards out and fired a shot.
The tie snaps a four-game losing streak for the Orange. Syracuse (1-8-2, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) visits Cincinnati Friday at 7:00 p.m.
