Sacramento, Calif. – Syracuse (3-8) lost a pair of matches at the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational. Syracuse lost to San Francisco 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-25) and UC Riverside 3-2 (30-17, 26-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-11).

"The team did not win a match today mainly because our ball control skills were not solid enough compared to California teams," said head coach Jing Pu. "Sam (Ainsworth) stepped up and demonstrated very successful serving today."
Junior Joscie Kaup recorded 36 digs in the match, raising her career total to 1,156. She passed Carrie Urton for fifth all-time in school history. Urton registered 1,129 career digs from 1994 to 1997.
Sophomore Emily Kaier led the team with 10 kills in SU’s match against San Francisco while junior Cheryl Cobbina added eight. Sophomore April Quigley led the team with 16 assists in addition to four digs and freshman Samantha Ainsworth finished the match with nine assists and seven kills. Kaup led the team with 18 digs.
“We had a slow start in the first game,” said assistant coach Carol Munger. “In the second game, we played really well. It was a very promising game but unfortunately we didn’t win. San Francisco is a good team and we did things that we hadn’t shown yet.”
SU was close in each of the three matches before the Dons pulled out the victory. Syracuse trailed 19-18 in the first game only to see San Francisco end the game on a 11-3 run to pull-out the nine-point victory. With the second game tied at 24, the Dons scored six of the game’s final eight points to win 30-26. In the third game, San Francisco used a 7-2 run in the middle of the game to take a 21-14 lead. The Dons were able to hold off the Orange for the three-game victory.
Against UC Riverside, Cobbina led the team with 16 kills and added nine digs and career-best five assists. Ainsworth set career highs with 13 kills, 12 digs, five service aces and two block assists. Freshman Sarah Morton posted a personal-best nine kills and six block assists. Quigley led the team with 43 assists in addition to a career-best eight kills. Kaup recorded a team-high 18 digs.
“Against UC Riverside, it was our first five-game match,” Munger said. “It was a new experience for the team. Next time, I am confident that we will be able to pull through and win.”
The match against the Highlander featured numerous runs. UC Riverside opened the first game with a 16-2 run en route to the 13-point victory. Syracuse quickly jumped to a 16-3 lead in game two and held on for the 30-26 victory. The Highlanders led by as many as six points in the third game only to see the Orange take a 26-25 lead. UC Riverside responded by scoring the game’s final five points to take a 2-1 advantage. The Orange jumped to an early lead again in game four, leading by as many as nine points to tie the match at two. In the fifth and deciding game, the Highlander led 7-2 only to see SU score the game’s next six points and take an 8-7 advantage. UC Riverside closed out the match on an 8-3 run to clinch the victory.
