SYRACUSE - Six Orange teams competed throughout the opening week of the month of October. The Syracuse field hockey team returned to the national polls with a No. 20 ranking before a crucial 4-2 BIG EAST victory against No. 18 Villanova. In men’s soccer action, sophomore Tom Perevegyencev collected his third score of the season in the Orange’s 2-1 loss against Rutgers. The Syracuse tennis team began its 2007 fall season at the Billie Jean King Tournament in New York, N.Y. The Orange rowing team finished first in the open eight at the Head of the Ohio before two top-four finishes at the Head of Genessee in both the open eight and the open four. The SU volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Georgetown. The Orange women’s soccer team posted a 3-2 win against DePaul behind a career-best two goals from senior Jen Taormina.
The No. 28 Orange men’s cross country team and SU women’s cross country team, also receiving national votes, resume action on Friday, October 12 at the National Open hosted by Penn State. One day later on Saturday, the Syracuse men harriers will preview the site of the 2007 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Pre-Nationals Invitational.

The No. 20 Orange field hockey team improved its record to 11-3 overall, the program’s best 14-game start since 2001, and 3-1 in the BIG EAST after a 4-2 win against No. 18 Villanova, the Wildcats’ first conference loss of the season. Freshman Maggie Befort tallied one goal and one assist, setting the new SU rookie standard for points in a season with 28. Senior Brittany Angellella, senior Gloria Nantulya and freshman Shelby Schraden each posted one goal as junior goalkeeper Heather Hess made four stops for the Orange. Befort collected one goal and Hess posted nine saves as the Orange opened the week with a 3-1 loss at No. 12 Penn State.

Sophomore Tom Perevegyencev scored his third goal of the season and junior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia tallied six saves, but a late goal in the final five minutes handed the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 win. Cavicchia’s six stops raised his career total to 198. Sophomore Hansen Woodruff led the Orange offense with a team-best five shots.

Complete 2007 Men’s Soccer Schedule
The SU rowing team opened the 2007 season on Saturday with a first-place finish at the Head of the Ohio in the open eight. The Orange bested Villanova, West Virginia, Robert Morris, Penn State, Maryland and Duquesne in the 2.6-mile annual race. Syracuse responded one day later with a pair of top-four finishes in the open eight and open four at the Head of the Genessee. The Syracuse A boat finished fourth in the open eight with a time of 33:36.89. The Orange A boat placed fourth in the open four with a time of 37:50.36.

The Orange tennis team, under the direction of second-year head coach Luke Jensen, completes its first weekend of competition on Monday, October 8 at the Billie Jean King Tournament in New York, N.Y. The SU volleyball team snapped a three-match skid with a convincing 3-0 win against Georgetown. Redshirt-junior April Quigley tallied a team-high 35 assists, posted 12 digs and fell just shy of a triple-double with eight kills. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the Orange offense with a team-high 14 kills. Senior Joscie Kaup paced the SU defense with 20 digs while sophomore Sarah Morton collected five total blocks. Cobbina, sophomore Kacie MacTavish and freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis each posted a team-high 14 kills in the Orange’s 3-2 loss against South Florida on Friday. Four SU players tallied at least 10 digs as Cobbina and Kaup led with 12.

Freshman Dana Bergstrom, who led the SU attack with a team-high seven shots, and sophomore Chelsea Berry tallied helpers. Sophomore Sara Grimsgaard contributed her first goal of the season in the win. Junior Karrah Benson set a program record with her third penalty kick goal of the season in the Orange’s 4-1 loss against Notre Dame. Bennett-Hatten turned away seven shots from the Fighting Irish.
