SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2007 Syracuse volleyball season came to an end following a 3-0 loss to top-seeded No. 21 Louisville in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday. The Orange men’s rowing team tallied three top 10 finishes in the varsity four and freshman eight at the Foot of the Charles on Saturday. The SU men and women’s swimming and diving teams were led by the record-setting performances from Natalie Mazzetta and Catrina Roth, and two top finishes from Kuba Kotynia at the weekend’s Nike Cup.
The Orange men’s rowing team concluded its 2007 fall schedule at the Foot of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on Saturday. Five Syracuse boats hit the water and three posted top 10 finishes in the varsity four and the freshman eight. The Syracuse “A” boat finished 10th in the varsity four with a time of 12:53.9. In the freshman eight, the Orange “A” boat finished third with a time of 13:27.7. The Orange “B” boat tallied an eighth-place finish with a time of 14:24.9.

The Syracuse men and women’s swimming and diving teams posted a pair of sixth-place finishes at the weekend Janis Hape Nike Cup held in Chapel Hill, N.C. Freshman Natalie Mazzetta and Junior Catrina Roth established new Orange school records in the 400 IM and 200 back, respectively. Mazzetta’s time of 2:02.13 surpassed the previous SU mark of 2:02.62, while Roth’s 4:23.25 finish eclipsed the former event-best tally of 4:23.91. Freshman Kuba Kotynia tallied two first-place finishes in the 100 breast (56.09) and 200 breast (2:00.63).

The SU volleyball team qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since to the 2005 season but could not overcome top-seeded No. 21 Louisville in the opening round. Despite 10 kills apiece from senior Cheryl Cobbina, junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Kacie MacTavish, the Cardinals posted a three-game sweep of the Orange. Redshirt-junior April Quigley collected a squad-best 34 assists, while senior Joscie Kaup led the Orange defensive stand with a team-high 13 digs. At the tournament’s annual banquet, Cobbina and Kaup received second-team all-conference recognition and head coach Jing Pu, in his 13th season with the Orange and 18th overall, was acknowledged for collecting his 400th career coaching triumph.
