The Orange women's basketball team is riding the momentum of a five-game winning streak into Sunday's contest against Northeastern at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange carries a 6-1 record into the weekend, while Northeastern stands at 3-3.
The game can be heard live on WTLA 1200/1440 AM and on suathletics.com via Orange All Access. The voice of the SU women's team, Brian Higgins, will have the call. The contest can also be heard on WJPZ 89.1 FM and live video of the game will be available via Orange All Access.
The Orange is 6-1 for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign and will try and go to 7-1 for the first time since 1997-98.
SU is outscoring its opponents 72.3 points per game to 59.7. On the glass, head coach Quentin Hillsman's group is outrebounding the competition 46.7 to 37.0 and has pulled down 50 or more boards in three games.
The defense has been just as strong as the offense by forcing 19.4 turnovers per contest. SU is limiting its opponents to 34.7 percent (148-426) shooting from the field and 29.1 percent (37-127) shooting from behind the three-point line.
Freshman guard Erica Morrow is averaging a team-high 2.0 steals per game, while senior center Vaida Sipaviciute has 2.3 blocks per outing. She is only two rejections away from hitting a career-milestone of 200.
Morrow is fourth on the team with 11.7 points per game and leads the team in steals and assists (4.3 per outing). Another newcomer, junior Candrea Jones leads the team with 14.1 points and is second with 8.6 rebounds per outing. Virginia Tech transfer, sophomore Vionca Murrayis averaging 6.7 points and 4.1 boards.
Northeastern is coming off a 67-47 loss to Long Island on Dec. 1. Just as Syracuse did, the Huskies opened the 2007-
08 campaign with a 69-65 victory against Coppin State. The Huskies have four players averaging double-figures with Ashlee Feldman leading the way with 12.5 points. Behind her is Lucia Pablos with 12.3 points and Shaleyse Smallwood and Kendra Waltkon are both averaging 10.8 points.
This is the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools and Syracuse holds a 6-1 advantage. Between the 1980-81 and 1986-87 seasons the teams met six times. SU took the first meeting, 64-58, in Boston on Feb. 6, 1981. The last meeting was a 73-66 Orange victory in the championship game of Hoopfest in Binghamton, N.Y., on Nov. 21, 1999. Syracuse is 3-0 all-time at home against Northeastern, but has never played the Huskies in the Carrier Dome.
