Seven Orange Football Student-Athletes Named to BIG EAST All-Academic Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seven Syracuse University football student-athletes earned recognition on the 2006 BIG EAST All-Academic team. Sophomores Ryan Durand, Jake Flaherty, Ben Maljovec, Patrick Shadle and Bruce Williams are two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selections, while juniors Dowayne Davis and Max Meisel are first-time honorees. Davis and Meisel become the 53rd and 54th Syracuse student-athletes to be named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team. Syracuse players have been named to the conference’s academic team a total of 102 times since 1992.
Sophomore Ryan Durand (Leominster, Mass.), who is majoring in health and exercise science, started all 12 games this season. He helped SU run the ball for a total of 1,283 yards for the season. Durand has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll all four of his semesters at Syracuse.
Sophomore James Flaherty (Wakefield, R.I.) is currently enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences. He saw action in all 12 games this season and recorded four tackles and 0.5 tackle for loss. Flaherty is a four-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, being named to the list all of his semesters at SU.
Sophomore Ben Maljovec (Warren, Pa.), majoring in information management and technology, appeared in all 12 games in 2006. He posted 12 tackles and intercepted two passes, including returning one for a touchdown against Miami (Ohio). Maljovec was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the 2005 spring semester.
Sophomore kicker Patrick Shadle (Morgantown, W. Va.), who is enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences, connected on 16-of-18 field goal attempts in 2006. His 16 made field goals during his sophomore season are the fourth-most in school history, while his .889 field goal percentage is the second-highest by an SU player in a single season. Shadle finished the year ranked 20th in the NCAA and second in the BIG EAST with 1.33 field goals made per game. He was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in both his semesters during his freshman year.
Sophomore Bruce Williams (Syracuse, N.Y.) is currently enrolled in the College of Human Services and Health Professions. He appeared in six games for the Orange, returning eight punts for 58 yards (7.2 average). Williams is a two-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, being named to the list in both of his semesters at Syracuse.
Junior Dowayne Davis (Bronx, N.Y.), who is majoring in information management, finished the year third on the team and tied for 15th in the BIG EAST with 5.8 tackles per game (70 total tackles). He also recorded three pass breakups and one forced fumble in 2006. Davis was previously named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the 2006 spring semester.
Junior Max Meisel (Weston, Conn.) is dual majoring in psychology and television, radio & film. He appeared in eight games during his junior season and returned 13 punts for 103 yards (7.9 average). Meisel was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the 2006 spring semester.
