The Orange track and field teams will compete in the BIG EAST Indoor Championship on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 36 Syracuse student-athletes will compete at the conference championship in Akron, Ohio during the weekend.
Senior Aulton Kohn looks to become the first student-athlete in school history to win three consecutive 60m dash titles. Kohn set the BIG EAST Championship record to win his first title in 2005 (6.73) and repeated as champion in 2005. Oddly, Kohn’s biggest competition could come from teammate Michael LeBlanc. LeBlanc, a sophomore, set the school record in the 60m dash earlier in the season, posting a time of 6.67. LeBlanc currently owns the seventh-fastest time in the country while Kohn ranks 14th. Kohn will also compete in the 200m dash.
Junior Jillian Drouin will also attempt to repeat as BIG EAST Champion. Drouin won the high jump competition last year and will also compete in the pentathlon this season. She set the school record in the pentathlon earlier in the year with a NCAA provisional mark of 3,759 points.
Last season, Syracuse crowned five BIG EAST Champions at the indoor meet. In addition to Kohn and Drouin’s titles, Johnvonne Hernandez won the shot put and weight throw events and Sheron Mark won her second consecutive triple jump competition. Hernandez has also named Most Outstanding Field Performer. The women placed fifth last season, its highest finish since it placed third in 1993. The men finished 10th last season.
