TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Syracuse University softball team (5-16) was defeated by the No. 23/21 Georgia Bulldogs (21-8), 5-2, today in the semifinals of the Florida State Invitational. Sophomore Heather Kim was named to the all-tournament team for her performance during the weekend. Kim concluded tournament play with a .579 batting average going a combined 11-for-19 with three home runs, two doubles and nine RBI.
The Bulldogs put runners on first and second base with no outs in the second inning but failed to score after sophomore RHP Brittany Gardner retired three of the next four batters.
Georgia broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Kellie Middleton led off the frame with a single and stole second base. She would later score the first run of the frame on Melissa Wood’s fielder’s choice RBI. Kristin Schnake knocked in two additional runs after scoring Wood and Alison Horne on a single to center field.
Syracuse plated its first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning on Ev Anderson’s fielder’s choice RBI.
The Bulldog stretched their lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning on Megan McAllister’s RBI double and Horne’s sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Nicole Miller cut the Georgia lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single down the right field line.
Brittany Gardner took the loss for the Orange after surrendering five earned runs and 11 hits in 7.0 innings. Georgia stranded 11 runners through the first five innings against Syracuse.
The Orange will remain in the Sunshine State to compete at the Stetson Tournament from Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 18. SU will compete against Elon and Stetson on the first day of the tournament.
