Asante Signs Contract with MLS's Toronto FC

TORONTO, Ont. – Former Syracuse soccer standout Rich Asante has signed a contract with the expansion Toronto FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Asante was selected by Toronto with the 27th pick in the MLS SuperDraft back in January.
Toronto is currently competing in the Carolina Challenge Cup preseason tournament in Charleston, S.C. Toronto lost its first match in the event to defending MLS Champion Houston, 2-0, on March 24, but Asante received a starting nod from head coach Mo Johnston against the Dynamo.
Toronto will face the New York Red Bulls on March 28 before wrapping up the tournament against Charleston on March 31.
Toronto FC will play its inaugural match on April 7 at Chivas USA.
At Syracuse, Asante was an NSCAA All-Region Second Team pick in 2006. He also earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors after scoring two goals and an assist in his final campaign. Asante finished his career with five goals and a total 14 points. During his four years at SU, he played 63 matches at central midfield and started the final 35 games of his career.
