
Orange Earns Sixth-Seed In 2007 BIG EAST Championship; Will Face St. John's In First Round

2007 BIG EAST Tournament Bracket
Providence, R.I.-The Syracuse women’s tennis team (8-8, 4-3 BIG EAST) earned the sixth seed in the 2007 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Championship. The Orange will face 11th-seeded St. John’s (7-9, 4-5) in opening round play on Thursday, April 19, at noon. The winner of that match will play Louisville in the winner's bracket on Friday at noon. The tournament will be held at the University of South Florida.
Two-time defending BIG EAST Champion Notre Dame garnered the top seed, followed by South Florida, Louisville and Marquette. West Virginia is the fifth-seed, followed by Syracuse, DePaul, Seton Hall, and Connecticut. Cincinnati, St. John’s and Rutgers round out the 12-team field. Georgetown, Villanova, Providence and Pittsburgh will not participate in the tournament.
The top four seeds received a first round bye and begin play in the second round on Friday, April 20. Seton Hall takes on Connecticut and DePaul faces Cincinnati in first round matches at 9 a.m. West Virginia and Rutgers are in the other noon first round matchup. The semifinals will take place at noon on Saturday, followed by the championship match at noon on Sunday. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Syracuse lost to St. John’s in a regular season match on February 24, 6-1. Sophomore Maria Vasilyeva earned a singles wins for the Orange at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2.
Syracuse has been a part of the BIG EAST Tournament every season since the championship changed to a team format in 1995. The Orange finished second in 1995 and again in 2005. Syracuse won BIG EAST titles in 1982, 1984 and 1985.
