Orange Ousts Rutgers In Consolation Round

Tampa, Fla.-The sixth-seeded Syracuse Orange (10-9) beat the 12th-seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-13), 4-2, in a consolation round match at the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, April 21. Despite losing the doubles point, Syracuse battled back to win four singles matches to stay alive in the tournament. The Orange takes on seventh-seed DePaul in the fifth place match on Sunday at noon.
Down 1-0 after doubles play, Syracuse won four singles matches for the comeback victory. Sophomore Maria Vasilyeva, junior Catherine Zawadzki and senior Ashley Lipton all breezed to straight-set wins to put the Orange on top. Vasilyeva beat Anela Dujsic, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Zawadzki topped Katherine Arlak at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Lipton bested Caitlin Baker at No. 5, 6-3, 6-0. Lipton now has 150 career victories, giving her sole possession of sixth place on Syracuse's all-time wins list.
Senior Carolina Huignard clinched the match with her comeback victory at No. 5. After losing the first set, Huignard battled back to take the match in three, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Huignard has 114 career wins, good for 21st place on the school's all-time wins list.
Syracuse lost the first two doubles matches, giving the point to Rutgers. Vasilyeva and junior Olga Votavova lost at No. 1, 8-5. Freshmen Chelsea Jones and Anne Magellan were beaten at No. 3, 9-7. Magellan made her first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in the match.
