SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman RHP Brittany Gardner earned the win in game one, after she pitched a solid complete game, giving up just four hits and one earned run, while junior OF Rachel Tilford hit a three-run homer and junior RHP/OF Chanel Roehner hit a two-run homer to give the Orange a 5-2 win against the Scarlet Knights in the first game of the doubleheader. Despite a home run by sophomore1B Heather Kim, Roehner, who pitched the second game of the doubleheader, gave up two runs in the third and struggled in the sixth giving up back-to-back home runs, which was the difference in the 5-2 loss for the Orange. All seven runs scored by the Orange in both games of the doubleheader were off of home runs.
Gardner got out of the first inning of game one by only giving up one run, on a double by sophomore SS Sarah Kalka that scored sophomore 2B Brittany Loisel from second.
Sophomore OF Tonye McCorkle singled to start the offense for the Orange off of sophomore RHP Carissa Conroy. Kim walked, to put runners on first and second for Tilford. Tilford hit a three-run homer, gaining three RBI to put the Orange ahead of the Scarlet Knights, 3-1 at the end of the first.
Junior 3B Shantai Dixon singled to start off the top of the third inning. Dixon advanced to second on sophomore CF Amanda Shaw’s ground out. Senior 1B Kristin Madoch reached on an error by sophomore 2B Lindsay Wasek. Sophomore SS Sarah Kalka singled to left field, which scored Dixon, which was marked her as an unearned run in the books.
The Orange offense answered back after Tilford reached on a fielder’s choice, when Roehner hit a two-run home run to center field, to advance the score to 5-2.
Roehner got the start for the Orange in the second game of the doubleheader. She got in a little bit of trouble in the top of the third when she gave up two runs as Loisel and Madoch got the RBI on a series of singles and fielder’s choices that scored Shaw and Loisel.
The Orange came right back in the bottom of the third, when McCorkle got a double off of freshman RHP Nicole Lindley and Kim hit a home run to center field, gaining two RBI and putting the Orange on the board and tying the score at 2-2.
The tie was broken as Roehner gave up back-to-back home runs to sophomore DH Kaityln Valiante and junior C Ashley Hartley. Valiante’s home run was a two-run homer as Miller was on first after getting a single.
Sophomore LHP Keri Casas replaced Roehner on the mound to finish out the sixth.
