Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse softball team (12-24) swept a doubleheader from visiting in-state rival Binghamton (4-14), winning the first game, 12-0, in five innings, and the second game, 4-0, in seven. The Orange held the Bearcats to just three hits in the twin bill, while collecting 17 of its own.
Syracuse received a pair of gems from its starting pitchers. Freshman Brittany Gardner hurled a one-hitter in game one, collecting three strike outs and walking none in the shortened contest. The only hit Gardener allowed was a single in the second inning and she retired the final 10 batters of the game in order. Junior Chanel Roehner was equally as impressive in the game two, giving up two hits and striking out six in a complete game shutout.
Junior Rachel Tilford went 2-for-2 in the first game, including her first career grand slam in the third inning. She also had an RBI single to finish with five runs batted in. She was one of three Syracuse players with multiple RBI performances, joined by sophomores Tonye McCorkle and Heather Kim who each knocked in a pair. Four SU players scored two runs in the opener as well.
After freshman Ev Anderson and McCorkle walked to start the game, Kim drove them home with a double to center field. Kim scored on a sacrifice fly by Roehner two batters later and the Orange led 3-0 after the first inning.
Two more Syracuse runs crossed the plate in the second inning when McCorkle tripled home Anderson and later scored on a single by Tilford.
Syracuse exploded for six runs in the third inning. Senior Erin Gray homered to lead off the inning, smacking a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center. Back-to-back singes by sophomore Amy Kelley and sophomore Lindsay Wasek and a fielder’s choice grounder by sophomore Nicole Miller loaded the bases for the Orange with no outs. Anderson flied out to left, but it was not deep enough to score anyone. McCorkle followed with another fly ball to left that was deep enough to advance everyone one base. Kim then walked to reload the bases and Tilford smoked a deep fly ball to left center. The Binghamton left fielder crashed up against the wall, but could not make the play and Tilford had her first career grand slam to put the Orange ahead 9-0.
Tilford’s grand slam was the seventh in Syracuse softball history and the first since Dani Stuart hit one against Niagara on April 12, 2006.
The Orange tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Wasek laced a triple down the right field line and was driven in by Miller on a single to right field.
The second game was highlighted by sophomore Lindsay Wasek’s first career home run. With the Orange already ahead 2-0, Wasek hit a line drive to right field in the fourth inning that bounced off the top of the wall and over. McCorkle drove in another run in the inning when her double plated Anderson to put the Orange ahead by the final margin.
The Orange took the lead in that game with a run in the second and third innings. Sophomore Keri Casas drove in Wasek with a single in the second and Kim scored on a wild pitch in the third.
Syracuse visits Pittsburgh for a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
