Orange Hits Its Way To Fourth-Consecutive Win

PITTSBURGH – The Syracuse University softball team swept the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, 7-5 and 10-5, today to improve to 14-24 overall and 5-5 in the BIG EAST Conference. Junior Rachel Tilford ended the day with a .600 batting average, going a combined 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored. Junior Chanel Roehner went 4-for-8 (.500) with two RBI, three runs scored and a double and sophomore Lindsay Wasek hit the second home run of her career, in a three RBI performance.
In game one, Roehner went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored as Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh, 7-5, after holding leads of 2-0 and 6-3.
Syracuse scored one run in the second and one run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Roehner reached on an error by the Panther shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior Erin Gray. Sophomore Amy Kelley grounded out to the shortstop, but advanced Roehner to third where she scored off a Wasek single. In the third inning, junior Rachel Tilford walked and scored on a double for Roehner.
Pitt took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on Jessica Dignon’s long shot to right center field that was dropped, giving her three bases and scoring senior Morgan Howard on the play. Howard scored after re-entering the game since Mary Hecker pinch hit for her and tallied a two-run single up the middle with two outs on the board.
Syracuse regained the lead in the fifth inning after scoring four runs off five hits and a Panther error. Tilford and Gray both recorded a RBI and Kelley added two in the inning. Sophomore Tonye McCorkle, Tilford, Gray and Roehner all scored.
The Orange added one more run in the sixth for its final run of the game. Tilford walked and advanced to second on a passed ball where she scored on a Roehner single to right field.
Later in the sixth, Dignon recorded another RBI when she hit a single that bounced through right field. After Dignon stole second, Joey Scarf tallied a sacrifice groundball that scored Rebecca Stottlemyer for the Panthers' fifth and final run of the game.
Freshman Brittany Gardner improved to 7-18 on the season, allowing two earned runs off eight hits, while striking out eight in a complete seven innings of work.
Syracuse kept the pressure on and opened a 5-0 lead en route to a 10-5 victory in game two. Roehner improved to 7-6 on the year, allowing five earned runs off 11 hits, while striking out five in a complete seven innings of work.
Syracuse tallied its first runs in the third, scoring three runs off four hits. It then scored two more runs in each of the following two innings.
SU opened the third inning with a Wasek single to right field and a bunt single by freshman Ev Anderson. McCorkle advanced both runners to second and third, respectively, with a groundball to the pitcher and sophomore Heather Kim singled to left field to score Wasek and advance Anderson. Tilford then singled to right field to score both Anderson and Kim to give SU the 3-0 advantage.
Wasek then hit a two-run home run to center field to score Kelley to put the margin at 5-0.
Kelley doubled to right center that scored Roehner and Tilford to make the score 7-0.
Samantha Card tallied a three-run, two-out double to right field in the fifth inning to put the Panthers on the board. Next, Scarf tallied a two-out single to center field in the sixth to score senior Howard. Pitt scored its two runs off four hits.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Nicole Miller singled to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Anderson. Miller scored on a McCorkle single for the Orange’s eighth run of the game.
With two-outs and Gray and Kelley on in the seventh, sophomore Keri Casas tallied a double to score two more runs in the ball game.
Syracuse returns to action with a doubleheader at Buffalo on Tuesday, April 11. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
