SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Leading the Orange women’s lacrosse program to new heights in 2007, five Syracuse student-athletes have been honored as regional All-Americans. Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.), senior Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) each earned first-team All-Northeast Region honors, while senior Shari Appollon (Freeport, N.Y.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) were both named to the second team. Syracuse’s three first-team selections and five total selections are tied for the most in the region.
Quillinan, who was the only freshman to be selected to the Northeast Region First Team and one of only two freshmen in any region to earn Regional All-America First Team honors, recorded 57 points on 50 goals and seven assists during her rookie season. A first-team All-BIG EAST selection, Quillinan established a new freshman standard at Syracuse with her 50 goals, eclipsing the mark that Rowan set in 2006 of 46 scores. Quillinan’s 50 goals rank third in school history and her 57 points are tied for the fourth-highest total in the program’s history.
An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Pike was an offensive force during her senior season. Mainly a defensive midfielder and goalkeeper her first three seasons with the Orange, Pike recorded 52 points on 44 goals and eight assists after totaling only eight points and four goals her first three years at Syracuse. Her 44 goals in 2007 are tied for the seventh-highest total in school history.
Rowan, who earned first-team regional All-American accolades for the second-consecutive season, led the Syracuse offense and set school records with 86 points and 59 goals during her sophomore season. A unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Rowan joined Leigh-Ann Zimmer (2002 and 2004) and Gaddy Fortune (2006) as the only SU players to score at least one goal in each game in a single-season.
In just her second season, Rowan is putting her mark on the SU record books. She already ranks fifth in career points (142), fifth in career goals (105) and sixth in career assists (39). Rowan became the quickest player in school history to score 100 career points and goals, reaching the plateaus in just 28 and 34 games, respectively. She also matched single-game school records with 10 points and seven goals against Rutgers earlier this season.
In addition to her school records in points and goals, Rowan also recorded the third-most assists in a single season with 27. She not only ranks among the best at Syracuse, but also ranks highly in the nation. Rowan currently stands ninth in the NCAA with 4.53 points per game, 12th with 3.11 goals per game and 30th with 1.42 assists per game.
Appollon anchored the Syracuse defensive unit that came on strong at the end of the season. Syracuse’s defense came up big as the Orange won the inaugural BIG EAST Championship Tournament, holding opponents to an average of just seven goals during the championship. Appollon played in 15 games during her senior season and totaled 13 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
Dove joined Quillinan as one of the most talented freshman in the country. The duo combined to score 97 goals and is one of only two sets of freshmen teammates to earn regional All-America accolades (Brown is the other). Dove set a SU freshman record with 58 points and finished just behind Quillinan in the race for goals with 47. Dove’s 58 points are the third-highest total in school history, while her 47 goals are tied for the fourth-most in the program’s history. In addition, she led the team with 50 draw controls, the second-highest total in school history. Against Cornell, Dove set a school record with 11 draw controls.
Syracuse’s five regional All-Americans, who are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams, helped lead the Orange to uncharted territory in 2007. Syracuse set team records with 13 wins and 288 goals, crushing the previous mark of 205 scores. During the 2007 season, Syracuse won its first BIG EAST Regular season championship, won the first-ever BIG EAST Championship Tournament with its first-ever victory against Georgetown and won its first NCAA Tournament game, defeating Vanderbilt, 16-10, to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
