Orange In Contention For Titles After First Day At IRA

Camden, N.J.-After the first day of competition at the 2007 IRA Regatta, the Syracuse men’s rowing team has three boats in contention for grand finals. The Orange took second place in the opening heats of the second varsity, varsity four w/o coxswain and varsity open four races.
In the varsity eight race, ninth-seeded Syracuse came in third place with a time of 5:48.820, just missing out on qualifying for one of the top semifinals. Top-seeded Washington won the race with the fastest heat time (5:35.931) and eighth-seeded Brown took second (5:36.656). The Orange then competed in the repechage heat 1 and came in second place with a time of 5:46.834, just behind Oregon State (5:44.559).
Syracuse advances to the third semifinal, which will take place at 12:24 on Friday. Syracuse faces Holy Cross, Boston, Virginia, Purdue and Columbia in the semifinal. The top three boats in that semifinal advance to the third level final with the top three boats from the fourth semifinal.
In the second varsity eight race, Ninth-seeded Syracuse placed second in the first heat with a time of 5:51.913. Top-seeded Wisconsin won the heat (5:47.806) and Navy came in third (5:55.190). Syracuse and Wisconsin advance to the top-two semifinals, which begin at 1 p.m. on Friday. The top three boats in each of those semifinals advance to the grand final, while the other six boats advance to the petite final.
In the freshman eight race, the Orange came in fourth place in its heat with a time of 6:06.007, behind Washington (5:48.506), Princeton (5:55.689), and Navy (6:01.924). In the fourth repechage heat, the Orange placed second, coming in at 6:02.886, with Yale in first (5:58.256). Syracuse will face Bucknell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Delaware, and Rutgers in the fourth semifinal on Friday at 11:48 a.m.
Both Syracuse fours came in second place in their heats. The open four clocked in at 6:42.177 in the second heat and the four w/o coxswain finished in 6:18.064 in the first heat of its race. The open four is in heat two of the repechage on Friday at 8:12 a.m. against Georgetown, Harvard and Navy. The varsity four w/o coxswain is set to compete in the first heat of the repechage at 9:36 against Boston, Michigan, Yale and Georgetown.
There are three repechage heats in each fours classification. The winning boat of each repechage advances to the grand final on Saturday. The second and third place boats advance to the petite final, and all other boats advance to the third level final.
