SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Orange men’s soccer standout Patrice Bernier has signed a three-year contract to play for FC Kaiserslautern of the German Bundesliga (Premier League). Most recently, Bernier played professionally for Tromso of the Norwegian First Division from 2004-07 and was a member of the Canadian National Team that advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Gold Cup.
Bernier turned down several offers to stay with Tromso in order to join the Bundesliga, one of the top professional soccer leagues in the world.
Kaiserslautern stumbled in the standings last season and will compete in the league’s second division when play gets underway later this summer. Bernier is expected to play midfield.
At Syracuse, Bernier was a member of the NSCAA All-Region First Team in 1999 and was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team choice in 1998. He scored 16 points in 1998 and tallied 18 in 1999 for a total of 34 career points. Bernier started all 38 games of his career and he ranks seventh all-time in points per game at 0.89.
