SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Although undrafted, former Syracuse center Darryl Watkins is still working to make his NBA dreams come true. Watkins has earned a tryout with the Sacramento Kings and will join the team for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas from July 6-15. The league features 21 NBA teams as well as the Chinese National Team.
“We just think Sacramento’s a great situation for him,” his agent Mark Bartelstein said. “We had about a dozen teams contact us. There’s a lot of interest. (Sacramento) has a number of roster spots open for big guys. They like him a lot. They had him on a visit.”
Watkins averaged 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks for the Orange in his senior season. He finished fifth in school history in blocks (263) and his 112 rejections last year was the most by a senior in school history. He ranked seventh in Division I last season in blocks.
The Kings had just one pick in Thursday night's draft and they used it to select University of Washington center Spencer Hawes.
Watkins' SU teammate, Demetris Nichols, was taken with the 53rd overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was subsequently traded to the Knicks for New York's second-round pick in the 2008 draft.
