Sims Returns To Syracuse Basketball

SYRACUSE, NY – Lazarus Sims, a key member of Syracuse’s 1995-96 team that reached the national championship game, has been named Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Player Development/Manager at his alma mater, according to head coach Jim Boeheim.
“We’re very fortunate to have someone with Lazarus’ background on our staff,” said Boeheim. “He’s been successful at everything he’s taken on.”
Sims will coordinate all personal, career and life skills development programming for members of the men’s basketball program. He will also coordinate student-athlete community service projects and be responsible for supervising the managerial staff and its duties at practice.
Sims earned his bachelor’s degree in child and family studies from SU in 1996. He was a four-year letterwinner with the Orange and played on three clubs that reached the NCAA Tournament, including the 1996 Final Four squad. His 281 assists in 1995-96 rank as the fourth-best single-season total in SU history. Sims is seventh in career assists (432) with the Orange.
He pursued a professional basketball career after leaving Syracuse. Sims started with Szczecin in Poland and averaged 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds per game. He returned to the United States for three seasons with the Atlanta Trojans of the United States Basketball League (USBL). Sims next stop was with the Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association (IBA). He averaged 11.2 points, 6.6 assists and 4.6 rebounds per outing. Sims spent the rest of 1998 with Cocodrilos de Caracas in Venezuela. Sims contributed 9.5 points and 5.1 assists per game. He returned to the USBL with the Atlanta Trojans in 1999.
Sims began two seasons with the St. Louis Swarm of the International Basketball League (IBL) in 1999. He averaged 7.9 points, 6.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds, and the Swarm won the IBL Championship. The squad, coached by Bernie Bickerstaff, successfully defended its title with Sims on the roster in 2000-01.
In 2001, Sims played for the Florida Sea Dragons of the USBL. He spent the 2001-02 Continental Basketball Association (CBA) season with the Rockford Lightning and averaged 12.1 points, 6.0 assists and 5.2 rebounds in 41 games. Sims was back with the Sea Dragons in 2002 (8.5 ppg., 3.9 rpg., 3.3 apg.) and then saw action in 13 games with the Great Lakes Storm (6.7 ppg., 3.2 rpg., 6.2 apg.) in the CBA. He was released by the Storm and signed with the Grand Rapids Hoops (26 games, 8.5 ppg., 3.7 rpg., 4.0 apg.) for the remainder of the campaign.
Sims was a part of the USBL Champion Dodge City Legend (8.0 ppg., 4.4 rpg., 7.3 apg.) in 2003. That year he also began a three-year tenure as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters’ competitive and show team, a stint that included an exhibition game against Syracuse. He was back in Venezuela playing for Panteras de Miranda in 2005 and returned to the Dodge City Legend (9.5 ppg., 4.6 rpg., 5.3 apg.) for another USBL title-winning campaign.
From 2005-07, he was a player and assistant coach for the Rochester RazorSharks of the American Basketball Association (ABA). He made the league all-star team both years. Rochester won the ABA championship in 2005-06 and Sims averaged 7.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists. He improved his assist average the second season with the RazorSharks, posting an 8.2 mark to go along with an 8.3 scoring average and a 4.7 rebound average. Sims also was a player and assistant coach for the Dodge City Legend (5.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg., 4.2 apg.) in 2006. The Legend reached the league championship game.
Sims has run basketball clinics in the Syracuse area sponsored by the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department. He also directed the Lazarus Sims Basketball Tournament, sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse, from 2002-04.
