KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Syracuse senior defender Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) is one of 20 nominees from around the country for the first Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in men’s soccer. The award will be presented annually to an NCAA Division I men’s senior soccer player who excels both on and off the field.
Lowe’s recently announced the addition of men’s and women’s soccer to its awards program, which also expanded last year with the additions of baseball, softball, men’s hockey and men’s lacrosse.
Candidates were selected based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. While the on-the-field performance during their collegiate careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus.
Peetoom, a three-time team Defensive MVP and two-time captain, has guided the Orange to one of its best starts in the last 20 years. Syracuse is 4-1-3 through eight matches in 2007 and Peetoom has anchored an SU defense that has recorded four shutouts. Earlier this season, he was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week for his role in shutting out Ohio State and Penn State at the Wolstein Soccer Classic. He also has one assist on the year from his center back position.
Off the field, Peetoom is sport management major. He is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and has been named to the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll five times.
Peetoom is one of two nominees from the BIG EAST, joining Julius James of Connecticut.
A national media panel will select the 10 finalists for the award in October. Those 10 names will be placed on the ballot for nationwide voting beginning on Oct. 16 and concluding on Nov. 21. The winner will be announced during the NCAA College Cup scheduled for Dec. 14-16 in Cary, N.C.
CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and the program was launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving early to turn professional. The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg and was inspired by the story of former Duke star Shane Battier, who could have been an NBA lottery pick, but elected to return to college where he led the Blue Devils to the national championship and earned his degree.
