BETHLEHEM, PA – The 26th-ranked Syracuse men placed second in a field of 41 teams, and the Orange women finished sixth out of 47 squads at Friday’s 34th Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. Junior Jeff Scull led the SU men with an eighth-place finish and junior Nana Sang-Bender finished 14th to pace the women.
“We did some really good things today,” said third-year Syracuse head coach Chris Fox. “Overall, it was a good day for both teams. We’re pleased with our performances.”
In addition to Scull’s team-best time of 24:26, the Syracuse men placed five finishes in the top 30. Sophomores Dan Busby (24:48) and Brad Miller (24:43) finished ninth and 18th, respectively. Graduate student Jordan Davis (24:47) placed 22nd and freshman Stephen Murdock (24:49), competing in his first collegiate meet, ranked 27th. Senior Kyle Heath finished 53rd (25:22).
Villanova finished first with No. 27 Princeton, Penn and La Salle finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, behind the Orange. No. 4 Iona, currently ranked first in the Northeast Region, finished eighth. Syracuse entered Friday with its first national ranking in program history and stood second in the region, one spot better than its preseason forecast.
Sang-Bender’s 14th-place time of 21:00 led the SU women’s attack. Senior Liz Cufari (21:29) and sophomore Maegan Krifchin (21:32) finished 31st and 34th, respectively. Freshman Katie Hursey placed 41st with a time of 21:39.
No. 13 Princeton captured the crown on the women side as West Virginia, No. 23 Texas Tech, No. 5 Wisconsin and Stony Brook completed the top five.
The Paul Short Invitational is dubbed one of the largest cross country meets in the nation.
The Syracuse men and women’s cross country squads will enjoy a two-week hiatus before returning to action on Friday, September 12 at the National Open hosted by Penn State. One day later, the Orange will preview the site of the 2007 NCAA Championship at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind on Saturday, October 13.
