SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s soccer squad dominated the second half against South Florida, outshooting the Bulls 9-0, but couldn’t find the back of the net and lost 1-0 on Friday, Oct. 10 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The loss is the first for the Orange at home this season.
South Florida (6-3-3, 3-2-1) scored the only goal of the game when Gina Pacheo netted the game-winner on an assist from Chantelle Goodson in the ninth minute. The Bulls’ goal came on its first shot of the game.
After each team recorded three shots on goal in the first half, the second half was all Syracuse (4-6-2, 1-3-1) as it maintained possession and had several scoring chances. However, the Orange couldn’t get a shot past USF goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi, who made five saves to preserve the win for the Bulls.
“That defensive breakdown (in the first half) has occurred a number of times during the last few weeks,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “Unfortunately, today it cost us the game. We can’t allow that to continue to happen.”
Syracuse outshot South Florida, 12-3, and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Orange goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded three saves.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Marquette at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
