SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to BIG EAST division leader Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 12 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange goes to 4-7-2 overall, 1-4-1 in league play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 9-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 against BIG EAST foes.
Marquette’s goal came at 27:07 in the first half when Brittany Bares found Ashley Bares up field. Ashley Bares continued towards the goal and put her shot on the left side of the net for the lone score of the afternoon.
Playing a man down throughout most of the second half, the Orange attempted three shots in the final frame. The Marquette defense was led by goalkeeper Natalie Kulla, who recorded four saves. Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded three saves for the Orange, which lost its second straight 1-0 decision.
“I'm hoping that we can curb the frustration of the last two games because anytime you get frustrated you tend to try harder,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “I don’t think it’s a case of us trying harder. We’re creating opportunities. I think it’s a case of us being more composed.”
Marquette outshot Syracuse, 11-7, and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Orange returns to the field Tuesday as it travels to Georgetown for a 3 p.m. game.
