
Mullan and Skelly Capitalize on the Powerplay Situation in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Freshman forward Lisa Mullan (Victoria, British Columbia) notched her first career goal on the powerplay as the Syracuse ice hockey team registered a season-high 23 shots in a 3-2 setback to Robert Morris at the Clearview Arena on Saturday night. Freshman winger Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) added onto her list of Syracuse firsts when she recorded the Orange’s first powerplay goal in the opening period. Skelly netted SU’s historic first goal just nine seconds in the first contest at Colgate, as well.
Skelly has scored first for the Orange in both contests SU has put the puck in the net.
Mullan and Skelly aided each other in their respective powerplay markers. Mullan was awarded her second assist of the year, fostering Skelly’s powerplay tally in the first period. Skelly’s second helper of the season came later in the third period when she reciprocated on Mullan’s goal.
Sophomore center Stefanie Marty (Nussbaumen, Switzerland) generated her first point of the season by assisting Mullan’s goal during the 5-on-4 situation.
Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) blocked 21 shots on Saturday night, extending her season total to 151 saves. Schoedel has hindered 151-of-168 opponents’ shots (.899%) this season.
Junior defenseman Gabrielle Beaudry (Cortland, N.Y.) directed the Orange with a game-high four shots against Robert Morris’ Brianne McLaughlin. Sophomores Julie Rising (Millbrae, Calif.) and Cheyenne Bojeski (Hamilton, Ontario) and freshman Kelly Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each placed three shots on target. Rising remains SU’s shot leader with 13.
Skelly exploited McLauglin at 10:18 of the first period when she buried Syracuse’s first powerplay goal for the 1-0 lead. Senior Nikki Leone (Trenton, Ontario) and Mullan both received their second career assists on the goal. At 8:29, RMU’s Kristen Miles was called for slashing followed up by Chelsea Walkland’s hooking breach at 10:09, granting Syracuse a two-skater advantage.
Freshman Janelle Malcolm’s (Edmonton, Alberta) interference penalty at 16:01 setup RMU’s Kathry Stack to tie the game, 1-1, at 16:37 of the first stanza.
The Colonials snatched the lead with just 22 seconds remaining in the first period. Sophomore forward Julie Rising (Millbrae, Calif.) was sent to the box for a hooking call at 19:23 and Brianna Delaney capitalized, beating Schoedel at 19:38 for the 2-1 advantage.
Syracuse outshot the Colonials, 10-6, in the opening session.
Mullan returned the favor at 3:49 of the third frame to even the score, 2-2. Paige Pietrangelo received a hooking penalty at 3:36 and Marty created the scoring opportunity by feeding Mullan 13 seconds into the powerplay. Skelly was credited with the helper on the play, as well.
Bojeski was caught with a hooking call at 7:09, creating another Colonials’ extra-man opening. Megan Picinic deposited the game-winning powerplay tally at 8:45 of the final period.
All five goals in Syracuse’s 3-2 loss came by way of a powerplay situation.
The Orange went 2-for-9 on the powerplay while Robert Morris put together three goals on eight powerplay opportunities.
Skelly leads Syracuse with two goals and four points heading into a non-conference battle at Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Game times are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
