WASHINGTON, D.C. – Syracuse freshman Amanda Morris scored her second goal of the season in the Orange women soccer squad’s 3-1 loss to No. 19/21 Georgetown on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Syracuse (4-8-2, 1-5-1) dictated play in the first half, outshooting Georgetown (10-1-2, 5-1), 5-2, but couldn’t get a shot past Hoya goalkeeper Jackie Desjardin as the teams were tied 0-0 at halftime.
Georgetown recorded the first goal of the game when Toni Hudson scored off a throw-in in the 46th minute. The Hoyas increased their lead in the 56th minute on an own goal before Hudson notched her second goal of the day after the ball was knocked loose from Orange goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan. Syracuse scored its goal in the 84th minute when sophomore Megan Bellingham flicked the ball through the Hoya defense to Morris, whose shot got by Desjardin on the low right side. It was Bellingham’s first assist and team-leading 13th point of the season.
“Again we were the better team for a major part of the game,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We outshot them, so we are getting scoring chances. The effort was good. We just need to work on our composure.”
The Orange finished with nine shots to four for Georgetown, while the Hoyas had four corner kicks. Desjardin recorded five saves, while Bennett-Hattan finished with one.
Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium this weekend for its final home games of the regular season. The Orange hosts Seton Hall on Friday at 6 p.m. and Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
