Syracuse Varsity Eight Wins Head of the Genesee
10/13/2008 3:16:46 PM | Women's Rowing
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women’s rowing team opened its fall season with a first -place finish at the Head of the Genesee Regatta held at the Genesee Waterways Center in Rochester, N.Y. The varsity eight boat (Bow- Katie Lynch, 2-Susan Groff, 3-Sydney Axson, 4-Heidi Bulk, 5-Rachael Ogundiran, 6-Natalie Mastracci, 7-Kaitlin Grant, Stroke-Liz Henwood, Coxswain-Kate Todd) finished with a total time of 3238.23, six seconds faster than second-player finisher, Western Ontario. It was the first time in 17 years the Orange have one the head of the Genesee.
The teams race a three-mile course in the morning and then a 1,500-meter race in the afternoon. The winner is determined by taking the 1,500-meter time multiplying it by three and adding it the three-mile time.
“It was a good day for every boat that we entered,” said head coach Kris Sanford. “We race in the fall to prepare for the spring and I saw a lot of positives looking forward. We beat a lot of crews by under stroking them (lower strokes per minute) which is a really good sign for us. Every boat left the race today felling good.”
Syracuse’s B boat (Bow-Mandy DeHaven, 2-Brandis Arcadia, 3-Mary-Ellen Anderson, 4-Maura Helmer, 5-Ashley Tabor, 6-Allison Ehrke, 7-Julia Ruskin, Stroke-Jacque Lee, Coxswain-Emily White) finished sixth behind four A boats and only one other B boat.
The Orange A boat (Bow-Anne van Houten, 2-Christine DePompeo, 3-Sarah Stapp, Stroke-Jess Tacinelli, Coxswain-Lydia Wong) placed third in the varsity fours at 37:45.96.
Buffalo won the race at 36:40.99 and Cornell played second at 37:01.09. Syracuse’s B boat (Bow-Kelsey Wiemer, 2-Lauren Silverstein, 3-Brittany Jock, Stroke-Alexandra Pines, Coxswain-Catherine Wilcox) played fourth at 40:09.14
Syracuse returns to the waters at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, October 26 in Princeton, N.J.
