SYRACUSE, N.Y. – There were no remnants from yesterday’s defeat when the No. 1 ranked Syracuse women’s field hockey team took the field against Holy Cross today at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange registered a 7-0 shutout victory, improving to 15-1 on the season.
As usual, the Orange’s defense was spectacular, allowing only three shots, one of which was on net. The ball always seemed to be on the Crusader’s side of the field, a testament to the hustle and intensity Syracuse exhibits each and every game. By trapping Holy Cross defensemen in its own territory, the Orange was able to force many turnovers, a handful of which led to scoring opportunities.
On the offensive side of things, the Orange was in total control. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor tied the school record for goals in a game with four, a feat she accomplished earlier this year in a 12-0 win against Colgate. With eight points in today’s game, Taylor moves ahead of Yvonne Milionis (1990) for sole possession of first place on the team’s all-time single-season points list with 56.
Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica showed her selflessness through three assists on the day, something which she had done earlier this season in victories versus Louisville and Central Michigan. Loncarica, who now has 50 points this year, moves herself into second place on the all-time single-season points list behind Taylor and into first for most points in a season scored by a freshman.
Sophomore forward Kahli Vojkovic accrued her first points of the year on an unassisted goal that came with 20:29 left to go in the second half.
Penalty corners came often for the Orange today, 13 to be exact. Syracuse leads the nation in penalty corners taken per game (10.67), a stat that reflects their ability to make things happen inside the circle. Execution is the key to producing efficient results, and the Orange was able to do just that.
The shutout for Syracuse is its seventh of the season, the most since it had 10 in 1997. With three regular season games remaining, the possibility to accrue a few more is certainly within reach.
Next up facing the Orange will be BIG EAST rival Villanova, when the two teams square off at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Friday, October, 24th at 3 p.m.
