
Syracuse Concludes Non-Conference Schedule at Home Tuesday Against Adelphi

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men’s soccer team (6-4-3, 3-4-1) steps out of conference on Tuesday, Oct. 21 to play its final non-league game of 2008 against Adelphi at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match concludes the Orange’s three-game homestand and is the first meeting between the two teams since 2005. Admission and parking for the contest is free.
Syracuse is unbeaten in its last 19 non-conference matches, the second-longest non-league unbeaten streak in the country behind Wake Forest (37 games).
ABOUT THE ORANGE
Junior forward Tom Perevegyencev scored for the Orange in the 86th minute to provide the winning margin against the Blue Demons. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Perevegyencev has 10 points on the year and is tied with senior Kyle Hall for the team scoring lead. Senior Spencer Schomaker assisted on the play. He is is tied with sophomore Geoff Lytle for the Orange assists lead (4).
Syracuse lowered its team goals-against average to 0.86 with the victory. Senior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia made one save in the second half to earn the victory. He has been the keeper of record in every match this season and has eight shutouts and 60 saves on the year. He lists third in the BIG EAST in saves.
DEFENSE AMONG THE BEST IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Syracuse has allowed 11 goals in 13 games this season and owns a 0.86 goals-against average. This year’s club is on pace to post the fifth-best team goals-against average in school history. The 1982 Orange holds the program standard with a 0.45 goals-against average (10 goals/2,000 minutes).
Syracuse has recorded eight shutouts this season, the most for an Orange club since 1989. Goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia has earned all eight blankings. He is a half shutout behind Charlie Wilke for fifth on the team’s single-seasons shutout chart. Wilke registered 8.5 shutouts for SU in 1989.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
Patrick Figueiredo is the team’s leading scorer with 23 points. He has 11 of the squad’s 23 goals on the season and ranks eighth nationally in goals per game. Kemalie Preston is second on the squad with 10 points (3g, 4a). Val Charalambous leads the Panthers with six assists.
Coach Carlo Acquista has used a pair of goalkeepers this season. Thorne Holder has appeared in nine game with eight starts. He has a 0.44 goals-against average with 33 saves and five shutouts. Vincent Treglia has also seen time between the posts for Adelphi. He has started four matches and made 12 saves.
Acquista is in his second year at the Adelphi helm. Prior to his appointment with the Panthers, he spent five years as the head coach at St. Francis College (N.Y.). Acquista graduated from St. John’s in 2000.
SYRACUSE-ADELPHI SERIES
Syracuse and Adelphi have met 26 times on with the Orange holding a 15-11-0 advantage in the all-time series. The first meeting came in 1980 and the two squads met every year from then until 2005. SU holds the longest winning streak in the series, emerging victorious in nine consecutive matches from 1994 to 2002.
