Syracuse Competes in Ithaca before Turning Its Attention to the BIG EAST Championship

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men and women's cross country teams are fresh off a strong showing at the Pre-Nationals race in Terre Haute, Ind. this past Saturday. The Orange is priming for the John Reif Memorial hosted by Cornell University this Friday, October 24, in nearby Ithaca, N.Y. on the Moakley Course. Friday's competition will be Syracuse's fifth meet of the 2008 season.
This past weekend at the Pre-Nationals, the Syracuse women's distance runners placed 11th out of 39 teams with senior Nana Sang-Bender leading the charge for the Orange as a result of her team-leading time of 21:16. Sang-Bender finished in 44th place out of 281 individuals in the 6K.
The Orange men captured 15th place out of 41 teams as junior Brad Miller fronted SU's efforts for the second straight competition. Miller placed 17th out of 276 runners with a time of 24:02 in the 8K trial.
Junior Maegan Krifchin ran for a time of 21:40, claiming 76th place. Freshman Heather Stephens and sophomore Catherine Desarle finished together in 21:45 for 83rd and 84th place, in that order. Sophomore Lauren MacKay wrapped up the 6K in 21:47 for 88th place and freshman Lauren Penney secured 90th place in 21:49. Junior Stefanie Slekis terminated her third race of 2008 in 23:27 for 229th.
Junior Jay Koloseus followed up Miller's pace with a 40th place time of 24:21 while junior Dan Busby concluded the 8K with a time of 25:05 for 120th place. Sophomore Steven Weeks ran in his second race of the season for the Orange, earning 130th place in a time of 25:08. Freshmen Tito Medrano and Griff Graves rounded out the Orange lineup with times of 25:23 and 25:42, respectively, for 160th and 198th.
In the previous three encounters, both the men and women generated first-place finishes in two of their meets.
In Syracuse’s first race of the season at the Harry Lang Invitational, junior Curtis Bixler directed SU's men to its first win with a triumphant time of 19:05.00 in Hamilton, N.Y. Freshman Lauryn MacFawn dominated the 4,200-meter run in a first-place clip of 17:00.00 to support the women’s winning effort at Colgate.
The Orange men and women recorded their second straight team victory at the Harry Groves Invitational in University Park, Pa. Busby led the men to a perfect 15-point sweep at Penn State by securing first place with a time of 25:58 on the 5.2 mile course. Krifchin's second-place time of 21:39 in the 6K provided the women with their second straight win.

At the Paul Short Invitational, the Orange men picked up second place out of 45 teams and the women placed fifth out of 43 squads. Miller's fifth-place finish of 23:58 ushered the Orange while Krifchin guided Syracuse for the second race in a row with a 19th place time of 20:54.
Once the John Reif run concludes, the Orange will focus its attention on the BIG EAST Championship. Last season, the Syracuse men obtained fifth place and the women finished fourth at the conference meet. Nine men and nine women will represent the Orange. The chance of running in the NCAA Regionals is up for grabs based on the performances at Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y. on Friday, October 31.
