Orange Loses at Connecticut, 2-0

STORRS, Conn. – The Syracuse women’s soccer lost to Connecticut, 2-0, on Friday, Oct. 24 in Storrs, Conn. The Orange goes to 5-10-2 overall, 2-7-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Huskies improve to 6-8-4 overall, 4-3-3 against league opponents.
Connecticut took the lead in the 11th minute when Melissa Busque’s cross from the right side found Brittany Tegeler, who scored on a shot from the left side. The Huskies increased their lead in the second half when Kacey Richards found the back of the net on a shot from just outside the box to the top right corner of the goal in the 62nd minute.
“We had our opportunities in the second half, but didn’t put them away,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “Connecticut’s goalkeeper came up with two big saves. We had some great individual performances. Unfortunately we again had two breakdowns on defense and it cost us goals both times. The team represented themselves with class and fought hard. We’re moving in the right direction even though we lost.”
Connecticut had nine shots on goal, while Syracuse had three. The Huskies registered five corner kicks to two for the Orange. SU junior Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded seven saves, while UConn’s Stephanie Labbe had three saves.
Syracuse closes out the regular season on Sunday at Providence at 1 p.m.
