
Orange Earns No. 1 Seed in BIG EAST Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 3 Syracuse University field hockey team earned the No. 1 seed in the 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship announced the conference offices Sunday morning. The Orange will face No. 4 seed Providence on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the University of Connecticut’s George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. The semifinal winners will play on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. and the champion receives the league’s automatic bid to the 2008 Division I NCAA Field Hockey Championship.

Syracuse earned a 4-2 victory against the Providence Friars earlier this season on Sept. 26. SU held a 15-6 advantage in shots during the game and a 12-5 edge in penalty corners. Four different Orange players scored the goals for Syracuse and senior goalkeeper Heather Hess made three saves. The Orange leads the all-time series with the Friars 16-6-4 and has won nine of the last 12 contests.
The Orange earned a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship on Saturday, Nov. 1 with a 7-1 win at Rutgers. Sophomore Lindsey Conrad had her second hat trick of the season, while freshman Martina Loncarica dished out a school-record tying three assists for the fourth time this season.
Syracuse’s 18-1 overall record is a program best and the Orange finish the regular season with a 5-1 record in BIG EAST play.
