Orange Varsity Four Takes First at Foot of the Charles

BOSTON- The Orange men’s rowing team concluded its fall season on Saturday, November 22 at the Foot of the Charles. Syracuse entered a total of six boats in the varsity four and freshman eight races, and recorded a first and fifth-place finish in each competition.
The Orange’s varsity four “A” (Bow - Vince Berry, 2- Mike Gennaro, 3- Dan Berry, Stroke- Martin Etem, Coxswain-Kenny Marfilius) took first out of more than 40 boats in the varsity four race, crossing the finish line with a time of 12:59.2. Harvard “A” placed second in the event in a time of 13:01.1.
“I thought it was a good day and not just for our varsity four “A” but for all our boats,” said head coach Dave Reischman. “We continued to show improvement and raced hard in tough conditions.”
Syracuse’s varsity four “B” (Bow- Ryan Patton, 2- Clai White, 3- Brian Azeff, Stroke- Dan Turner, Coxswain- Jamie Hubbell) placed ninth with a time of 13:15.0. SU’s varsity four “C” (Bow- Tim Daigle, 2- Mike Bagnall, 3-Matt Hopek, Stroke- Marko Trnavcevic, Coxswain- Emily Leister) finished 20th in 13:37.8 and the Orange’s varsity four “D” (Bow- Pete Kruse, 2- Julian Morrison, 3- Ryan Planer, Stroke- Chip Keyes, Coxswain- Michael Armour)placed 22nd with a time of 13:40.8.
In the freshman eight race, Syracuse’s top boat finished fifth out of 19 total entries. The Orange’s freshman eight “A” (Bow- Aidan Barrett, 2-Dom Grifo, 3- James Olson, 4- Derek Rubin, 5- Kynan Reelick, 6- Chris Lutz, 7- Joe Gartland, Stroke- Steve Connors, Coxswain- Isaac Budmen) checked in with a time of 12:47.6.
Harvard “A” won the race with a mark of 12:22.6. Yale (12:27.5) was second and Brown “A” (12:34.2) was fourth. Syracuse’s freshman eight “B” (Bow- Kevin Courtney, 2- Ben Allegrezza, 3- Jim Behr, 4- Pat Warden, 5- Mike Dietrick, 6- Chris Bickford, 7- Jon Sutton, Stroke- Nigel Gross, Coxswain- Jenna DeMarco) placed 13th, crossing the finish line at 14:06.9
With its fall season completed, Syracuse will begin winter training sessions indoors, as well as make one trip to Florida and another to South Carolina, in preparation for its spring debut on April 4-5 in the San Diego Crew Classic.
