VILLANOVA, Pa. – Syracuse played its final regular-season road game Sunday afternoon at Villanova. Sophomore Hayley Todd tallied eight kills and three blocks assists in the Wildcats 3-0 sweep of the Orange.
Freshman Noemie Lefebvre was close behind Todd with seven kills, while juniors Kacie MacTavish and Sarah Morton recorded four and three kills, respectively. Senior April Quigley had 22 assists for the second-consecutive game.
On defense, junior Shanetha McLaurin contributed 11 digs and senior Marissa Kanemura had nine. Lefebvre, MacTavish and freshman Ashley Williams had five apiece. Joining Todd in blocks were Morton, who had four total blocks, and Quigley, who had three. Morton is in fourth place on SU’s all-time total blocks list with 450 and is six away from tying Dana Fiume (’00).
Sophomore Mindy Stanislovaitis put the Orange on the board first with a kill, and was followed by a Todd service ace and a Wildcat attack error to put the Orange up, 3-0, early. Villanova wasn’t deterred, however, as it came back to score the next five points. The Wildcats didn’t look back and controlled the remainder of the set. Syracuse had a late six-point rally, but it would be it wouldn’t be enough as the Wildcats closed the set, 25-13.
The Wildcats maintained the momentum going into the second set and were up 16-10 midway through the frame. SU fought back to within a point thanks to kills from Morton and Todd and a few Wildcats errors. A key Wildcat timeout would stave off the Orange enough for the Wildcats to regain a strong lead and win the set, 25-18.
After the intermission, the Orange grabbed the lead early and maintained control for most of the third set. SU led 17-10 about halfway through, but a Villanova would begin to chip away the Orange advantage. Syracuse took a timeout with the score 17-14, but despite tallying the next point, the Wildcats would post the next four points to tie the set, 18-18. The two teams fought to the bitter end with the Wildcats closing out the set, 25-23.
