SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team tallied five wins in singles play after a sweep in doubles competition en route to a commanding 6-1 win against Bucknell on Sunday at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Playing its third match in three days, the Orange improved its record to 3-0 at home in 2008.

Syracuse set the contest’s tone early with a convincing three-match sweep in doubles play, led by sophomore Ashley Spicer and freshman Jacquelynn Tang at the No. 3 position. Spicer and Tang rolled to an 8-1 win, improving their season mark to 4-3. Freshmen Christina Tan and Simone Kalhorn posted an 8-3 win at the No. 1 position and pushed their record 3-4.
With the doubles point sealed and delivered, junior Maria Vasilyeva and sophomore Chelsea Jones shined in the third match and completed the sweep, battling to an 8-7 (7-3) victory and collecting their team-leading fifth win.
The Orange momentum carried itself into singles play as Vasilyeva posted the contest’s first win, a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the No. 3 position versus Carlin Calcaterra. Tan, playing at No. 1, shortly followed with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Paulina Gamboa. Vasilyeva and Tan each improved their record to 4-3.
Similar to one hour prior, Tang and Spicer strolled off their respective singles courts at the same time with two victories in hand. Tang’s record moved to 4-3 after besting Caitlin Baffa at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0. Spicer, now 5-2 in singles play, tallied her fifth win in the last six matches with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Dara Dwojewski at No. 5.
Kalhorn (5-2) recorded Syracuse’s fifth and final singles triumph of the late morning, early afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Lauren Lucido at the No. 2 position. The rookie matches Spicer with a team-high five wins.
Jones (4-3) suffered a singles setback, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) against Lauren Rotkamp at No. 6.
Freshman Katlyn Haycock totaled two exhibition wins in singles play against Kirstyn Sotak and Renee Weissand, 8-2 and 8-6, respectively.
Syracuse (4-3, 2-0) returns to the road on Friday, February 15 against Cornell at 2:00 p.m.
