NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Jillian Drouin captured the women’s pentathlon crown in day one of the 2008 BIG EAST Indoor Championship at the Armory Track in New York, N.Y. Drouin’s NCAA-qualifying total of 4,099 points breaks the Syracuse school record and eclipses the Armory Open and Collegiate record.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Jillian Drouin captured the women’s pentathlon crown in day one of the 2008 BIG EAST Indoor Championship at the Armory Track in New York, N.Y. Drouin’s NCAA-qualifying total of 4,099 points breaks the Syracuse school record and eclipses the Armory Open and Collegiate record.
Drouin’s performance surpasses the SU standard she set last season with a second-place finish and total of 3,948 points at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in Akron, Ohio. En route to the pentathlon title on Saturday, she finished with the top time or marks in three of the five events.
Drouin posted the top time in the 60m hurdles (8.64), and top marks in the high jump (1.76m) and shot put (12.45m). She tallied a leap of 5.90m in the long jump, ranking second. The conference’s 2007-08 scholar-athlete of the year posted a time of 2:31.51 in the 800m run.
Junior Jeff Scull earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish and time of 14:09.59 in the 5,000m run.
Senior Ramon Sosa and junior Terry Marshall qualified for Sunday’s 60m hurdles final with times of 7.99 and 8.12 seconds, respectively. Junior Skyy Simmons qualified for the 500m dash final with a preliminary time of 1:03.79.
Sophomore Maegan Krifchin and freshman Liz McCarter tallied qualifying times of 2:57.74 and 2:59.48 in the 1,000m run, respectively.
Junior Bernard Bush posted a distance of 7.24m in the men’s long jump, finishing fourth and just one spot shy of All-BIG EAST accolades. Graduate Sheron Mark finished sixth in the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.97m. Bush and Mark will compete in the triple jump on Sunday.
After one day of competition, the Orange men and women own identical fifth-place rankings.
The 2008 BIG EAST Indoor Championship continues Sunday.
