Rowan Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week; Gibson Named to Weekly Honor Roll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse University junior Katie Rowan has earned the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week award for her performance in the Orange’s two victories last week. In addition, senior Christina Gibson has been named to the league’s weekly honor roll.
Rowan totaled 15 points in two contests last week. She scored a pair of goals and tied her career high with four assists in Syracuse’s 22-8 victory against Binghamton. Rowan followed that performance with nine points on five goals and four assists in the Orange’s 21-10 victory against Hofstra. She scored the first goal of the second half against the Pride, sparking the SU offense on a 9-0 scoring run. Rowan had two goals and two assists during the spurt. The nine points tie her for third on Syracuse’s single-game scoring list. Rowan leads the Orange and the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 6.6 points per game this season.
Gibson anchored Syracuse’s defense, which allowed an average of nine goals in the two victories. She recorded three caused turnovers and two groundballs for the Orange. Gibson leads the team in caused turnovers with nine and is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST, averaging 1.80 per game.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play on Sunday when it travels to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
